Not only is oatmeal extremely healthy with loads of fiber but with the proper recipe it is easy to make and super yummy. I make a pot full and leave it in the fridge. recipes never ceases and yesterday I cooked this up.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As usual I read a recipe I liked, found I did
not have half the ingredients it called for so I invented my own.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This recipe uses bok choy and shiitake

antioxidants this recipe should not need any more convincing but it is also

pot.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When all the water has boiled away,
about 20 minutes turn off the heat but keep the lid on until you are ready to
use it.</span></div>

are translucent and garlic gets a brownish tint.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Now add the mushrooms and the bok choy cook
for about 15 minutes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Once the bok choy
and mushrooms are tender, add coriander and pepper, mix it in.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>

Lucious green lawns and flower beds more colorful than a rainbow are the reward of the hard work of the tireless gardeners. As I walk through the neighborhood, I frequently stretch my neck in hopes of getting a look at a vegetable garden here or there but unfortunately they are far and few between. But when I do get a glimpse at one, a bigger smile spreads across my face. </div><div><br></div><div>All plants are beautiful and serve a purpose in this world but my favorite plants are those I can eat. We plant a vegetable garden every year and each year we get better and more courageous, willing to experiment with new varieties. Vegetable gardening is not only fun but it is healthy for more reasons than you think!</div><div><br></div><div>First off, it is a great work out. If you garden properly, it is not strenuous. In fact it builds strength and stamina. Whenever I garden the next day my legs are soar from all the squats I did mindlessly getting done to dig, plant, pick and weed. My arms get a great work out from all the lifting and digging. And I get some heart healthy walking from going back and forth from the garden to the garage, kitchen or wherever I have to go. </div><div><br></div><div>In addition to the work out, gardening encourages people to eat more vegetables and fruits especially kids. Children get excited about the peas, green beans, lettuce or whatever they grow in their garden making them more willing to try new foods. </div><div><br></div><div>Finally, it also a fun productive way to spend time with the family. It gives everyone a sense of accomplishment of what the family did together. Children like to show off their gardens to friends and family which help build self-esteem in their abilities to reach goals. At the end they have something to show, enjoy and share after all their hard work. </div><div><br></div><div>There is still some time to start your own. <span style="font-family: Calibri;">The last couple weeks have been eye-opening for me in regards
to children's nutrition.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Two distinct
and independent events occurred opening my eyes to the severity of the presence
of sugar, fat, and salt in our children's diets.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The first event came along during my son’s
first soccer game of the season. He is not new to soccer, he has been playing
since was three; he will celebrate his fifth birthday in a month or so. The
second event was at my son's school for their end of the year party.</span><br>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Let's start with the soccer, last summer the children would
play soccer and at the end of the game they got a snack and drink. The snacks
were usually sugary junk food like little Debbies cakes, Rice Krispy treats,
gummy fruits stuff paired with even more sugar in a Capri Sun juice.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I did not care for that practice but I was
expecting it. The new snack policy for soccer this year completely blew me out
of the water. Now let me explain how soccer games for these little kids’ works,
half of the team plays while the other half sits.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They play in 10 minute shifts and the game is
40 minutes long; most of the time the kids don't even break a sweat.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Even though the game is 40 minutes long, in
reality each child only plays for 10 minutes at a time for a total of 20
minutes. Now this year they switched up the snack policy, halfway through the
game the children get a snack for example a piece of orange or watermelon and
some water or a juice box.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Then once they
finish the second half of the game they are given a second snack usually an
unhealthy one like a fruit rollup, cookie, or Rice Krispy treat with yet
another box of juice.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Now let's be
reasonable here little kids jogging around the soccer field for 20 minutes
might burn 200 calories if they're lucky. Between the fruit, juice, and treat
these children are given over 400 calories of food. Is that really necessary,
is the US experiencing an epidemic of malnutrition or obesity?</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The second horrific experience was at my son’s and of the
year party. The teacher provided the goodie bags and she asked the parents to
bring snacks for the children for the party. I took a cantaloupe expecting
there to be lots of sweets but when I walked into the classroom that morning I
was completely astonished. There were nine different cakes for only 12 students!
On top of that, the goodie bags were full of Twix’s, Kit Kats, M&M’s,
Cheeto’s and many other candies.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wasn't
the cake enough? Nobody brought a fruit or a vegetable except for me, why? And
that was only one class, how about the bus driver, the gym teacher, and anyone
else who visited the class on their final week? Every where they turned they
were being showered with candy.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I understand that children like candy, I'm not a kid and I
like candy too. Isn’t all that overdoing it? Is there no limit anymore? Why do
we always have to tie happiness and celebration with food, especially sweets?
If the children made their own kites, decorated them, then went outside and
flew them, wouldn't that be a fun celebration for the end of the year? Or if
their teacher gave them a free period to play outside or play board games in
the classroom, isn't that fun too? Why must we shower them with sweets?</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Not only are we turning our children into materialistic
creatures feeling they must receive something in order to be happy or celebrate
but we're teaching them detrimental habits. We are branding it in their brains
that in order to celebrate or be happy food and candy must be available.
Without sweets, fat, and sugar there is no happiness. Is this the message we
want to send our children?</span></div>

and high in fat.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>After 40 days the
unlimited access rats became obese while the other two groups did not.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Additionally, after 40 days the unlimited
access group was willing to withstand pain in order eat the cafeteria food while
the other two groups were not. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Finally,
from CT scans performed the rats’ brains; researchers found that changes in the
brain chemistry of the rats with unlimited access to the high fat foods
resembled the chemistry changes of drug addicts. New studies are finding
similar changes in studies on humans.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">This change in brain chemistry may explain why obese
individuals feel helpless in front of food and are unable to control their
compulsive eating even though they know it is detrimental to their health.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If the same changes that occurred in the rats’
brains occurs in human’s who eat a high-fat, high- calorie diet, then these
individuals many literally be addicted to unhealthy foods.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is very important to keep in mind when
feeding children.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If they are constantly
fed high calorie, high fat foods, these poor children are slowly becoming
addicted to unhealthy junk food.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>No
wonder children are struggling with obesity at such young ages!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And no wonder children and adults are having
such a hard time losing weight.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Not only
do these individuals have the struggle of weight loss, but they may also be
dealing with an addiction. </span></div>

No goal in mind, I wondered around with my cart picking up different products
and reading the ingredient; most of them looking like the chemical gibberish
from my chemistry books. I kept asking myself why people intentionally ingest
chemistry experiments. I am not alone with this thought. Many health conscious
individuals share the same feeling. They do not want to eat chemicals,
preservatives, food coloring and numerous other things added by manufacturers
to the foods.<br />

Clean eating is eating food that does not contain foreign substances.
Ingredients for the products would be recognizable food names like olive oil,
whole wheat flour, sugar and other whole foods. Food is prepared using only
food grown by nature; this includes red meats, chicken, fish, shrimp and many
other unprocessed meats.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Baloney, pepperoni
and fish sticks are not on the menu at clean eating households. People eat foods
with no artificial anything. This entails cooking from scratch sometimes but
that does not mean it has to be a lengthy practice. You can find numerous clean

put together a night of family fun and education called PEP Night; PEP stands
for Play Harder, Eat Healthier and Power Down.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The children and their parents had a fun filled evening and learned
valuable life skills on how to eat healthy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The program was 3 hours long.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>During the first hour and a half the families visited 5 different
stations, each unique in the message it sent to the children and parents.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The first station was called Go, Whoa, Slow.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>No they were not riding horses, families
learned some foods could be consumed all the time like fruits and vegetables,
others can be eaten sometimes like sweetened fruit yogurts and some should be
eaten minimally like chips.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There were
three lines the children could choose from, red (slow), yellow (whoa), and
green (go).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The volunteer would call out
the name of the food and the children decided what category the food belonged
to and stood in the corresponding line.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>It was a fun game full of giggles and physical activity.</span><br />

children to brainstorm their favorite physical activity and draw it on a big
canvas.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>By the end of the evening the
canvas transformed into a colorful masterpiece of each child’s favorite
activity and was showcased in the school afterward as a reminder of all the fun
options children had to choose from.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Choices, Choices was the name of the next station.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was a variation of musical chairs where
children went from seat to seat each with a different habit written on it; some
of the habits were healthy and other were not.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Children who landed on the unhealthy habits had to explain why they were
bad habits and the group then brainstormed for healthier options.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The goal of this station was to teach
children how their everyday choices affect their health.</span><br />

relationship between exercise and calories.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Watching the parents and children doing jumping jacks for 1 minute then
telling them while they are huffing and puffing they only burned 10 calories
was the best part; how big their eyes got realizing the difficulty of burning
calories. This station plays a vital role in helping parents and children
realize exercise alone does make a person healthy or control weight.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Health results from a balance of both food
and exercise.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Finally my favorite station, Building a Healthy Plate, here
families learned about the new My Plate and the different food groups.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Then they were given a paper plate, glue and
cuttings from magazines and grocery store ads with an assortment of foods to
choose from.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Using their new knowledge,
children put together a healthy plate.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The dialog in this workshop was both
interesting and beneficial.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Children
asked about the nutritional benefits of different food and held discussions
amongst themselves about which food group different dishes belonged to.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to
talk to some of the children one-on-one.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Listening to their perspective and why they did not try different foods
was enlightening.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I was able to convince
some of them to try the vegetables or fruits they claim not like by explaining
how their bodies could benefit from them.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The best feedback I got about this station was from a mother who says her
daughter now refers to the healthy plate diagram for all of her meals.</span><br />

2006, green tea does have multiple beneficial attributes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Green tea is the richest of all teas in
antioxidants.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The antioxidants and
polyphenols in the tea contribute to cancer prevention, cholesterol reduction,
and anti-inflammatory functions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Additionally, green tea has presented antidiabetic, antibacterial and
antiviral abilities.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is all good,
but can green tea help promote weight loss like the media claims?</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">According to current research, there is no specific answer
yet.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>One researcher found that green tea
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">MAY</i> decrease percent body fat in
people who drink it habitually for more than ten years.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In another study, researchers instructed one
group of overweight women to drink green tea and a second group not to while
both groups followed the same diet plan.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>At the ends of the study, there was no difference in the amount of
weight lost between the two groups.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As a
result, the researchers said there is no relationship between green tea and
weight loss.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But that does not mean we
need to give up drinking green tea.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">There are multiple beneficial affects to drinking green tea,
especially when it comes to cancer, diabetes and high cholesterol

green tea are caffeine and teas in general effect iron absorption.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Therefore, just like all other foods and
drinks it is best to consume green tea in moderation around 3 cups a day to get the benefits of the tea
